In my opinion, I think the tablet did kill Leah because it was the drug that made her drink the water which ultimately lead to the water intoxication.
Moritz

That is in fact not proven. If you can find any evidence I will be more than happy to accept your point. However without sufficient evidence I do not see that your point is valid.

A subsequent inquest determined that her death was actually not directly due to MDMA consumption, but rather the result of the large quantity of water she had consumed,[9] apparently in observation of an advisory warning commonly given to ravers to drink water to avoid dehydration resulting from the exertion of dancing continuously for hours. Leah had been at home with friends and had not been dancing, yet consumed about 7 litres (12 pints) of water in less than 90 minutes, resulting in water intoxication and hyponatremia, which in turn led to serious swelling of the brain, irreparably damaging it.
.
25/2/2014 06:48:31 pm
Do you have any evidence against it?!
Moritz
25/2/2014 06:15:21 pm
Are you sure that it was the tablet. For all you might have known it could have been her free will to drink.
Jacob Patterson-Yates
25/2/2014 06:17:30 pm
Yes, I see your point MVC but she wouldn't have been intoxicated if she hadn't have taken the ecstasy!
Kyra
25/2/2014 06:16:09 pm
Even though it has been discovered that it was in fact the water intake that killed Lia, I believe that the ecstasy can be called the cause of Lia's death as she would not have drunk so much water if she had not taken the pill. It is very likely she would not have died if she hadn't taken the pill that day.
Kate
25/2/2014 06:16:46 pm
I think that the ecstasy tablet did not directly kill Leah. However by taking the tablet it meant that her body couldn't dispose of the water. She died of water intoxication from drinking 7 litres not from an allergic reaction to the drug.
Ellie
25/2/2014 06:17:08 pm
I disagree with Jacob because in the 75 drugs article it says that it was due to ""water intoxication", and not an allergic reaction to the drug" the only reason as to why she drank lots of water was because of the fact that she had seen the warning to drink lots of water and took it the wrong way as she wasn't exerting any energy into using up the water by partying as it said in the wikepedia article "Leah had been at home with friends and had not been dancing"
Ed
25/2/2014 06:17:15 pm
I believe it was the ecstasy that killed her because if she hadn't have taken the tablet then she would've never felt the need to drink so much water which was the reason why she died
Moritz

Although it was quoted that Leah did not have an allergic reaction towards the drug since she has previously taken it 3 times, the ecstasy tablet did kill Leah Betts because it prevented her body from urinating after consuming large amounts of water, causing her brain to swell which lead to body disfunction. 25/2/2014 06:17:45 pm
For this question you could argue both ways, on the one hand the tablet didn't kill her because she died of water intoxication, however she wouldn't have drank much water if she hadn't taken the ecstasy tablet. Therefore if she wasn't taught that taking ecstasy tablets could cause dehydration then she wouldn't have died by drinking too much water. I feel students must be taught the effects of taking drugs and if you were to take ecstasy then you should have someone who would look out for you.

The drug itself did not kill Leah Betts. She unknowingly killed herself, being misinformed that water will flush out the drug. She had too much water and consequently her brain swelled and lead her to a coma in which she never wok up from.

It was the tablet that killed her because if she drank the same amount of water in the first place then she wouldn't have died but because the tablet stopped her from being able to pee then the water went to her brain which killed her.
George
25/2/2014 06:29:33 pm
use of the word amount...? Therefore this argument is invalid.
Moritz
25/2/2014 06:21:23 pm
In agreement with Ellie, I can see it a plausible explanation if the student had a great teacher like ours, who would have without a doubt taught the students that when taking ecstasy that drinking too much alcohol has to be counteracted with the drinking of water.

In my opinion, Leah Betts' wasn't killed by the ecstasy tablet as she died of water intoxication. She was misinformed and therefore thought that after taking an ecstasy pill she should drink a lot of water. She drunk 7litres of water within 90 min which caused her hyponatremia. However the ecstasy pill played part in her death as well as it reduced her ability to urinate, which made her hyponatremia worse. Like the Times: Obituary states on the 14th of may 2007 "If Leah had taken the drug alone she might well have survived. If she had drunk the amount of water alone she would have survived". Therefore I think that it wasn't the drug that killed her, however the drug played a significant part in her death.
Svenja
25/2/2014 06:23:27 pm
In my opinion also the agencies who advised young people to drink plain water were partly responsible for her death. "She believed mistakenly that this was the way to ward off the ill-effects of the drug." So the tablet itself didn't kill her.
Chris Ashcroft
25/2/2014 06:24:28 pm
Doctors believe that if Leah had only taken the pill she would have survived. They also believe that if she had only drunk the water she would have survived. The extortionate amount of water she drank gave her a condition called Hyponatremia, and then the XTC supposedly restricted her ability to urinate, which only exacerbated the hyponatremia. This, combined with the actual water intoxication, and her inability to urinate, made it impossible for her body to maintain correct water levels. She fell into a coma and did not recover.

I believe it wasn't just the ecstasy that killed her but also the amount of water she drank after it. It says that if Leah had drunk the same amount of water when she hadn't taken ecstasy, it wouldn't have killed her. It also said that if she had taken the ecstasy and not drunk that amount of water, she wouldn't have died. This shows that it wasn't only the drug that killed her but there were other aspects. "If Leah had taken the drug alone she might well have survived. If she had drunk the amount of water alone she would have survived."[11] wikepedia article
Alex
25/2/2014 06:25:24 pm
I don't believe it was the tablet that killed Leah as it says in the article "She drank a lot of water but with a lack of understanding of why she needed to drink water. Water is not an antidote to Ecstasy, it is an antidote to dancing." This demonstrates that with proper understanding of the issue, she would not have taken in some much water in order to counteract the effects of the drug. It was the drug that stimulated this response as it was what she perceived was the best thing to do, however it was the drinking of such quantities of water that in fact killed her. However, the drug should still be help responsible because without the substance in her body she wouldn't have drank as much water and therefore later died of water intoxication.
George Southgate
25/2/2014 06:26:14 pm
I feel that if Leah did not take the tablet, then she wouldn't have drunk all of the water that consequently killed her. As people were told to make sure that they drink a lot of water if they were taking ecstasy, therefore she thought she was doing the right thing by drinking 7 litres of water in 90 minutes, however that is a ridiculous quantity of water to be drinking in such a short space of time. This resulted in water intoxication and hyponatremia which led to the swelling of the brain. Professor John Henry, who had warned people about ecstasy tablets causing death by dehydration, said "If Leah had taken the drug alone she might well have survived." Although the ecstasy tablet could have reduced her ability to urinate causing excessive water to stay in her body and the brain swelling up. If she had drunk this quantity of water without taking the tablet though, she would have survived. Therefore, both the water, and the tablet killed her.

It depends on your viewpoint. Did the chicken come first or the egg? Well if she hadn't taken the drug in the first place, it wouldn't have led to her consuming so much water which led to her intoxication and her death.
Izzy
25/2/2014 06:38:20 pm
In reply to your first question. The egg came first as it then mutated from a dinosaur to a chicken.
Jacob
25/2/2014 06:40:33 pm
It did not mutate, it evolved!
Maddie
25/2/2014 06:42:18 pm
Actually recent studies shows that the material that makes the egg shell could only have come from the chicken when it makes the egg and the embryo , therefore the chicken came first.
Izzy
25/2/2014 06:45:16 pm
but there were eggs long before the chicken and so out of one of those chicken dinosaury eggs cane out a more chicken dinosaury animal and so on until we came to the chicken.
Anna
